When the mayor of Patton Village, Pamela Munoz, contacted Montgomery County
United Way
’s Hispanic Outreach Coordinator Maria Jordan about the needs of her community,
she did not realize that she would have 71 volunteers on site in her city
within a few weeks of her call to assist the citizens of Patton Village.
Maria Jordan contacted her co-worker Brittany Carcamo, MCUW’s Days of Caring coordinator, who connected with U.M. ARMY (United Methodist
Action Reach Out Mission by Youth). U.M. ARMY sent 71 volunteers representing
six area United Methodist churches (Bryan,
Beaumont, Athens, Emery, Bullard and Quitman).
Volunteers worked on 15 to 18 projects including painting homes, building
porches and wheelchair ramps, cleaning yards and replacing
|
siding. MCUW Days of Caring is an ongoing initiative to connect volunteers to
those in the community in need of light repair projects.
Patton Village is forming a Hispanic Ladies Support Group at the Patton Village
community center that will meet once a month. MCUW
’s Maria Jordan is bringing in community resource speakers to inform the ladies
of available services in the
area. Tri-County MHMR recently provided information to the group on hurricane preparedness.
For more information regarding Montgomery County United Way’s Days of Caring program, contact Brittany Carcamo at 281-292-4155, ext. 267.
