music competition
The Montgomery County Performing Arts Society will host the 26th annual Young Texas Artists Music Competition at the Crighton Theatre in Conroe from March 11-13. The competition, an official music contest of the state of Texas, offers four divisions: voice; piano; strings; and winds, brass, percussion, harp and guitar.
Chris Johnson, host of KUHF-FM’s Afternoon Concert will emcee the awards event on Saturday evening. Artistic director for the contest is Emelyne Bingham.
The three-day event is open to musical artists, ages 18-30, who are Texas residents or students enrolled in a Texas college or music school. To apply for the competition, go to www.youngtexasartists.org.

The Woodlands Crawfish Festival, March 27
The first The Woodlands Crawfish Festival is slated for March 27 at Town Green Park in The Woodlands.
The event is a new community partnership between the Pulmonary Hypertension Association ’s local fundraiser, Cure PH and The Chamber’s Young Professionals Network (YPN). The two committees are bringing together their previous crawfish boil events to unite for The Woodlands Crawfish Festival.
Event attendees will enjoy crawfish, fried alligator, jambalaya, desserts and a variety of refreshments while listening to the sounds of a live zydeco band. A designated children ’s area will feature a variety of activities including a giant bouncing moonwalk, snow cones and popcorn.

breakfast with champions, jan. 19
Houston sportscaster Tim Melton with Channel 13 is once again co-hosting a Breakfast with Champions at 8 a.m. on Jan. 19 at the Fazio Clubhouse at Carlton Woods Creekside to benefit Montgomery County United Way.  
Former Cleveland Browns player Gerald Irons co-hosts this year along with the following sports champions: New England Patriots ’ Michael Bishop, PGA player Billy Ray Brown, Houston Rockets’ Matt Bullard, Washington Red Skins’ Rock Cartwright, Houston Astros’ Jim DeShaies and NBA Coach Bill Fitch.

North Houston Catholic Schools Celebrate Catholic Schools Week,
beginning jan. 31
The Theme for Catholic Schools Week 2010 is “Dividends for Life.” The celebrations will run Jan. 31-Feb. 6.
North Houston Catholic Schools strive to provide a strong Christ-centered Catholic education for pre-k through eighth grade. Extended Day, Spanish, music, art, physical education and keyboarding classes are offered on all campuses. Technology is integrated across the curriculum. Various electives can be found such as journalism, yearbook, drill team, theater, band and athletic programs. All North Houston schools are fully accredited by the Texas Catholic Conference Education Department and the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. junior league impact event, feb. 20
Erin Gruwell, a collaborative writer of the bestselling book, The Freedom Writers Diary: How A Teacher And 150 Teens Used Writing To Change Themselves And The World Around Them , will share her classroom wisdom with the community on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 9 a.m.-11a.m. at The Woodlands Church. The book became a feature film starring Hilary Swank. The event is sponsored by the Junior League of North Harris and South Montgomery Counties Inc.
Featured on numerous television shows, Gruell began her career at Wilson High School in Long Beach, Calif., where she was the teacher for a troubled group of students. Over the course of a few months, Gruwell empowered the class, who named themselves the Freedom Writers, to re-chart their future and go on to become college students, published writers and citizens for change.
This educational and entertaining community event is open to all. Educators will receive two Continuing Education credits. Tickets are $10 and are available at www.jlnhsmc.org. Educators in Conroe, Klein, Magnolia, Montgomery, Spring, Tomball and Willis may register at no charge on their district Web site.
