High-Tech Pen Pals Connect Across the Globe - Students in Lilia Gallivan’s Spanish IV class at The John Cooper School gathered in the Upper School technology lab to “meet” their pen pals in Argentina. The excitement on both sides of the hemisphere was intense as they got their first glimpses of each other after having corresponded online for several weeks.
Sam Johnston, a college student who interned at Cooper for six weeks under the guidance of Head of Upper School Joe Broccoli, initiated the project. After matching students from each school in pairs based on similar interests, they began to get to know each other through texts, e-mails, blogs and voice threads on Facebook
“The intent is for students to learn about each other’s lives, more locale, interests, schoolwork and culture while building language skills, particularly writing, ” Johnston said.
When it came time to set up a video conference session, Gallivan tapped into the technology resources on campus. Technology Director Rodney Lisembee and faculty member Shelley Gougenheim set up a video camera, monitor and computer linked to Argentina by Skype technology and a large screen.
Broccoli said the project was a true success and looks forward to pursuing the many ways faculty can incorporate technology into the educational process.
“This takes education out of a 45-minute time frame and four walls,” he said. “The possibilities are endless. It is particularly good at leveling the playing field because quieter students are more likely to speak up and participate through technology. ”

As a part of the “Read For a Better Life” initiative that Dr. Don Stockton implemented in 2007, this book fair involves not only parents and children, but members of the community who read stories to the children in attendance.
Also in attendance were Principal Marlene Lindsay and Associate Principal Deane Wilker. This reading initiative hopes to raise the awareness of parents and the community to the importance of reading.
