Young Texas Artists Music Competition chair Susie Pokorski announced the judges
for this year
’s competition. The event is presented by the Montgomery County Performing Arts
Society and will be held March 11-13 at Conroe
’s historic Crighton Theatre.
The five judges serving on this year’s YTA panel are Daniel Cataneo of The Juilliard School, Tony Caramia of the
Eastman School of Music, Maria Schleuning from the Dallas Symphony Orchestra,
Roger Pines of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Dan Stolper from Interlochen
Academy.
Bingham said that the quality of the judges the competition attracts is
phenomenal.
“They recognize the importance of this competition as a valuable vehicle to help
jumpstart the careers of promising young artists.
” Each contestant receives commentary from the judges, which serves as a valuable
career development tool.
Returning to judge is Daniel Cataneo, a celebrated pianist, who appears
frequently as a recitalist and guest soloist throughout the U.S., Europe and
Asia. He is a musical consultant for Viking Penguin Press, artistic director of
Cape May Institute and co-founder of the Northern New Jersey Conservatory.
Violinist Maria Schleuning, also a past YTA judge, is with the Dallas Symphony
Orchestra. She has been a soloist for the Oregon, Seattle, Columbia and Long
Bay Symphonies, and the New Philharmonic of Irving.
Dan Stolper, an instructor of oboe at the Interlochen Arts Academy, returns to
judge this year. He is a visiting professor at Indiana University
’s Jacobs School of Music and professor emeritus at Michigan State University.

New to the list of judges is pianist and composer Tony Caramia. A professor of
piano at the Eastman School of Music, he also serves as the school
’s director of piano pedagogy studies and coordinator of the class piano program.
Roger Pines, also new to the panel, is the dramaturg at Lyric Opera of Chicago,
where he serves as program editor and associate magazine editor. He coordinates
music for Lyric
’s annual Operathon and serves as lecturer and consultant for Lyric’s young-artist program.
“It’s a difficult task booking our judges because their schedules are so full,” Bingham said. “We’re fortunate that these judges make time for us and that they love to come hear
our terrific young musicians. I listened to the preliminary recordings and was
blown away by the level of some of these young artists. This is going to be a
fabulous event.
”
The competition is open annually to musical artists ages 18-30 (20-32 for
vocalists) who are Texas residents or enrolled in a Texas college, university
or music school. Winners will be announced at the Entergy Finalists
’ Concert & Awards on March 13. Chris Johnson, with KUHF-FM 88.7 Houston Public Radio, will
emcee.
Tickets for the Entergy Finalists’ Concert & Awards are available online at www.crightontheatre.org or through the Crighton Theatre Box Office, 936-441-SHOW (7469).
