Cooper MS Quiz Bowl Team Named Runner-up in Championship Round - A Quiz Bowl team consisting of middle school students from The John Cooper School made it to the final rounds of the Strake Jesuit Quiz Bowl Tournament.
The Cooper team won the first two rounds, was given a bye in round three and won again in the fourth round to make it to the championship round against TH Rogers where the team lost by five points. The middle school Quiz Bowl Club met twice a week for several months to prepare for the Strake Jesuit tournament. Cynthia Hathaway is the club’s lead faculty sponsor and George Albritton is her assistant.

Woodlands Prep’s Homecoming Dance - The Woodlands Preparatory School held its winter homecoming. The parent community organization spent days decorating the school ’s mezzanine in blue and gold and baking party treats for the many party revelers. The DJ played a great mix of current hits and party tunes that kept the high school students on the dance floor for most of the night.  Senior Marco Flores was crowned Homecoming King and sophomore Sydney Nelson was crowned queen.

Kindergartners Paint American Flags on Inauguration Day - Kindergartners at The John Cooper School painted American flags,  while the swearing in and inauguration ceremony for the 44th President of The United States, Barrack Obama, was played on TV screens in classrooms. Students in all three divisions at Cooper, from Pre-kindergarten-12th grade, took time out of their school day to acknowledge this important day in history.
Cooper Middle School Students Celebrate MLK Day - At the weekly middle school morning meeting of The John Cooper School, sixth-grader Sam Hodges gave a brief introduction of Martin Luther King Jr.’s I Have a Dream speech, followed by a video presentation of his speech for students. Afterward, sixth-grader Muna Uzodike, seventh-graders Sonia Johnson and Jeremy Mani, and eighth-graders Kate Donahoo and Levi Uzodike, individually delivered excerpts from the end of his famous speech.
Sara Sheppard, Paige Wharton, Judith Glatt, Sydney Bertrand, Christina Rizer and Claire Palmer.
Oak Ridge HS in Finals at State Qualifying Speech Tournament - The Oak Ridge High School Theater Department was very successful at the State Qualifying Speech tournaments sponsored by the Texas Forensic League.
At the Klein High School Invitational Tournament, Caroline Cunningham and Carrie Vaughn placed fourth and Judith Glatt and Sydney Bertrand placed second in duet acting finals. At the Westfield High School Tournament in January, Glatt and Bertrand again placed second and qualified for TFA State.
At the Atascocita High School State Qualifying Tournament, Sara Sheppard and Paige Wharton were first-place winners in duet acting for the entire tournament. Glatt and Bertrand again placed second behind their classmates, and Christina Rizer and Claire Palmer were fourth. Rizer was also in the finals in dramatic interpretation. All are members of the production class of the Oak Ridge Theater Department and are coached by Connie Sue Godwin.
Fourth-grade students enjoy a presentation that coincides with their study of American history.
Taking a Step Back to Revolutionary Times - John Keahey, an actor and presenter with Young Audiences of Houston, gave a presentation to fourth-grade students at The John Cooper School. This was a culminating activity for a semester-long study of American history. Keahey discussed the typical dress and gear of a “Red Coat” member of the British forces as well as that of an American Revolutionary. He also brought examples of typical attire for women and men at that time. The presentation was coordinated by fourth-grade teacher Susan Child.
