Just across from the dining room is a wine cellar, one of John’s favorite home features. Pleasant memories of a trip to Italy are evident on its wall —handmade tiles purchased from an artisan in a small village there.
The library, to the opposite side of the entry and down a hallway, has the feel of a lodge with a stone fireplace, overhead wood beams and comfy leather furniture. “This is pretty much where we live,” says Claire of the space. Evidence abounds. The television is on and crossword puzzles and newspapers are scattered about. “It’s just the best place to relax,” says Claire.
Down a bit is the master bedroom, a vision in soft blue and cream with a sitting area with fireplace. A large custom-made distressed hutch for a television, family pictures and other objects is a unique feature here. “Another instance where they could look at something and build it for me,” says Claire. “I can’t say enough good things about the cabinetry work in this house.”
Just past the master bedroom, to the end of the hallway, is another bedroom that John uses as an office. A bathroom conveniently built off of this room gives future homeowners many options for this space.
On the opposite side of the house, a staircase leads to two upstairs bedrooms and a game room, a favorite hangout for watching football games. Grandchildren feel right at home in the front bedroom, decked out in a whimsical toile wallpaper of deer, quail, fox and horses that complements the old country pine furniture. “We bought a ton of old country pine in Sonoma when we lived in California,” says Claire.
The home’s summer kitchen is a much-used space too, overlooking the pool and golf course. “We’re out here a lot,” says Claire. “Even when it’s a bit chilly, we’ll put that fire on sometimes.”
Even the laundry room is special in this house with striking green cabinetry and generous shelving and counter space. Travertine floors spill into this room as well. “It might have been a little extravagant, but I love my laundry room,” Claire says. “I love so many things about this house.”
