The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, newly-renovated with expanded covered
seating, celebrates its 20th Performing Arts Season with
20th Season Ovation, a lineup of events bursting with culture, patriotism, dance, classical music,
old favorites, innovative works and more.
In addition to eight performances by the Houston Symphony, including the annual
Star-Spangled Salute and Hocus Pocus Pops, the United States Army Field Band
and Soldiers
’ Chorus makes its Pavilion debut. Houston Ballet returns with a mixed-repertory
program; and the 14th Annual Children
’s Festival erupts with family fun.
The Pavilion has undergone a $9.5 million renovation and expansion including
construction of approximately 2,000 new reserved seats and a larger canopy
structure to cover all reserved seating. The covered seating area now consists
of 6,387 seats. Lawn capacity remains about the same at 9,653 for a total
capacity of 16,040.

The newly-renovated Pavilion celebrates its 20th season with a lineup of events
bursting with
culture, patriotism, dance, classical music, old favorites, innovative works and
more.
May 15 for Four Italians. The program includes music from Italian composers Rossini, Paganini, Puccini
and Respighi.
Rossini was a popular Italian composer who wrote 39 operas, as well as sacred
music and chamber music. Paganini was an Italian violinist, violist, guitarist
and composer. He was one of the most celebrated violin virtuosi of his time and
left his mark as one of the pillars of modern violin technique. Puccini was a
famed Italian composer whose operas, including
La Bohème and Madame Butterfly, are among the most frequently performed. Respighi was also an Italian
composer, but a musicologist and conductor as well. He is best known for his
orchestral Roman trilogy:
Fontane di Roma (Fountains of Rome), Pini di Roma (Pines of Rome) and Feste Romane (Roman Festivals).
The Houston Symphony will perform Pines of Rome along with Rossini’s overture to La scala di seta, Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1 featuring Eugene Ugorski and Puccini’s Preludio sinfonico. Pre-concert activities begin at 7 p.m.

Join the Houston Symphony, with Michael Krajewski, again on May 21 for an
enchanting evening of
Dancin’ Beneath the Stars. This starry night of music includes songs like Steppin’ Out with My Baby, Cheek to Cheek, Singing in the Rain, One O’Clock Jump and more. Guest dancers will light up the night, dancing to the nostalgic music
of the orchestra. Audience members will also have the opportunity to dance the
night away. Pre-concert activities begin at 7 p.m.
