YMCA Operation Backpack collects more than 800 back packs. Despite an economic slump, families living in Montgomery County stepped up to
the challenge of reaching out to hundreds of area children in need of backpacks
and school supplies for the new school year.
“Thanks to our members, staff and other generous community donors, we provided
supplies for more than 800 children in need who attend school in Montgomery
County CISD schools,
” said Mark Cochran, center executive director of the South Montgomery County YMCAs. “This year, especially with so many families struggling with the economic slow
down and loss of jobs, more parents were in need and not in a financial
position
to purchase their children’s school supplies. YMCA Operation Backpack helps ensure that all kids are ready for school.”
Backpacks filled with school supplies were dropped off to area schools the week
before the first day of school. School administrators distributed the supplies
to children and families in need ensuring that every child has the basic
supplies needed to be successful.
Even with the success of the 2009 drive, there are children still in need and
donations are still being accepted. For more information
