Friendship Center Hosts Senior Prom
Guests relive the roaring ’20s
High school may be only a memory, but 300 Montgomery County’s senior adults relived one of the highlights of their youth when they gathered at the Lone Star Convention Center for The Friendship Center ’s seventh annual Senior Prom. A king and queen were selected from each area of the county.
Seniors enjoyed an evening of dancing, refreshments and crowning of the king and queen.
This year’s theme was “The Roaring ’20s” with music provided by The Moonglow, an expansion of the popular group Nite Sessions. Many attendees donned ’20s-style of dress and competed in the costume contest.
The Senior Prom is one of six large events sponsored by The Friendship Center every few months to bring together seniors from all of the centers around the county. The Friendship Center also offers field trips for seniors as well as daily educational and recreational activities.
Other services provided by TFC include
transportation for seniors over age 60 or for the disabled; a Meals-On-Wheels program for home-bound senior adults as well as pet food for their best friends and companions; senior dining in conjunction with the daily activities at the six activity centers; counseling and case management by a master ’s level social work professional; a food pantry and assistance with gas costs; the Sixty Plus Dance Club; construction of wheelchair ramps, and information and referral to community resources. A project to help seniors impacted by Hurricane Ike resulted in 10 households receiving assistance through a grant from the Greater Houston Community Foundation.
The Friendship Center is a United Way agency funded in part by the Community Development Block Grant Program of Montgomery County.
