Small Walls Day, a building blitz that was held on campus on Sept. 12, kicked off
The John Cooper School
’s 11th Annual Habitat Homebuilding Project, affectionately dubbed “The House That John Built XI.”
Overcoming the threat of inclement weather, walls were constructed by more than
100 volunteers in record time, followed by a pizza lunch sponsored by the Upper
School Student Council.
Upper School students (grades 9-12) joined parents, faculty and Habitat
volunteers to construct over 30 small walls by noon that were transported to
the work site in Conroe for the first official workday at the homesite. Student
volunteers work the first and third Saturday of each month to
|
construct the home, with an expected completion date in March or April of 2010.
The Habitat Project is student-led by a steering committee that coordinates
participation by all divisions on campus. Upper School students participate in
the home construction, Middle School students provide support by donating
supplies and painting the home, and Lower School students lead the efforts in
fundraising as well as help landscape the home
’s front yard. From raising a minimum of $40,000 to fund the project, to planning
each aspect of the construction process, the Habitat Steering Committee works
diligently to provide a deserving family with a new home.
