Cooper Graduate Has Artwork on Display at Houston Holocaust Museum - Inspired by human courage and survival, Sarah Wiernicki’s artwork depicting her grandfather’s experiences as a Holocaust survivor and World
War II resistance fighter are on display at the Holocaust Museum Houston. Sarah
recently graduated from The John Cooper School.
The drawings, penciled for her Advanced Placement art concentration, weave in
details of her grandfather's life from an orphaned boy to a Polish Home Army
resistance fighter, to his time in a concentration camp and eventual freedom.
The six pieces center on John Wiernicki’s experiences. One shows a blue-tinged forest scene of the woods he used to hide
in to escape German soldiers, overlaid with a pencil drawing of a native plant
called sidesaddle, a reference to John
’s code name, Stirrups. Another piece shows
the railroad tracks leading to Auschwitz, splattered with red. Another is a
charcoal drawing of a pile of shoes, the notorious death camp remains, with
John
’s tattooed prisoner number in the background.
Sarah hopes that her work, which won second place and a $1,500 scholarship at
The Woodlands Waterway Art Festival, will transcend generations to keep the
story of the Holocaust alive. Sarah will attend Carnegie-Mellon University in
Pittsburgh this fall.
