You Conserve Water
Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District
While Maine might be feeling an autumn chill, The Woodlands is still sweating
through 100-degree days. Thoughts of wool sweaters would prompt laughter if it
weren
’t just too darn hot to expend the energy giggling. Despite scorching
temperatures, you can save water and maintain a nice lawn
—even increase your home value.
Montgomery County has grown by 130,000 people so far this decade, and the area’s water supply is limited. The Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District is
urging people to implement these conservation ideas to make sure Gulf Coast
Aquifer water lasts for future generations, and during extended periods of
drought, your water provider may implement separate watering guidelines that
replace or enhance the ideas below
—during those times, residents should contact their respective provider for more
information on possible water use restrictions.
•Operate your sprinkler system manually for more control over when and how much
you water. You want to apply no more than 1 inch of water every week. That
’s nearly the depth of a tuna can, so set one out and when it’s almost full, you are through watering.
•Use a drip irrigation system or soaker hoses rather than sprinklers to water
trees, shrubs and garden beds.
•Check your sprinklers often for directional aim and broken heads to keep from
watering sidewalks and driveways.
•Leaky indoor faucets tend to get your attention, but don’t forget to check outside spigots, pipes and hoses for leaks.
•Use water-wise plants native to Texas. You’ll find links to sites that can help you choose at www.WaterIQ.org, the home of an official Texas water conservation program.
“Fifty percent to 60 percent of the water homeowners use is outside, and half of
that water is wasted,
” said Kathy Turner Jones, general manager of the Lone Star Groundwater
Conservation District.
“Conserving water keeps costs from rising and water quality and availability from
suffering.
