cultural festival, oct. 18
The First Annual “Sharing the Spirit” American Indian Cultural Festival at Market Street – The Woodlands will be held on Oct.18 from 2 p.m.-5 p.m.
Visitors will be greeted with Native dancers adorned with traditional costumes,
thundering drums and flutists, mesmerizing storytellers, authentic Native
lodges, face-painters and approved-quality Native traders.
There will also be opportunities to register early for classes on making Native
American jewelry, leather and buckskin pouches, beading and paintings.
Additional class offerings include Basic Cherokee language, Native dancing and
more. Classes are $10 each or three classes for $25 and include all materials.
Admission is free. Festival attendees are encouraged to bring a special “End Hunger” brown bag available at H-E-B for $5. Proceeds will go to the Montgomery County

texas tee time, Oct. 23
The John Cooper School will host Texas Tee Time, the school’s 22nd annual golf tournament, on Friday, Oct. 23. The tournament will be held
for the third consecutive year at Gleannloch Pines Golf Club on Champions
Forest Drive in Spring. Under the leadership of chairperson Tom Forestier,
committee members are planning a full day and evening of activities beginning
with registration and lunch at 11 a.m., followed by a golfing shotgun start at
1 p.m. A dinner, raffle drawing, live auction and awards will kick off at 5:30
p.m. Individual tournament fee, with dinner, is $300, and tickets to the
evening events are $40.

teen support group, mondays
The Montgomery County Women’s Center hosts a support group every Monday from 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. for females,
age 13-17, who are victims/survivors of family/sexual violence.

heart walk, nov. 7
The American Heart Association’s Heart Walk will take place on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Northshore Park in the
Woodlands.
Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. Online registration, team recruitment, sample fundraising letters and online
donations are available at

The ALS Association, Greater Houston Chapter will host the Walk to Defeat ALS on Nov. 7 at Lone Star College. Check-in begins at 9 a.m. and walk starts at 10
a.m.

Aviary Arias in the art alcove
Charlie Jean Sartwelle’s Aviary Arias will be displayed in the Art Alcove at the Barbara Bush Branch
Library in Spring in September. Sartwelle graduated from Alfred C. Glassell
School of Art in ceramics and sculpture. She has exhibited in numerous local
and national exhibitions, and co-founded MotherDogStudios in 1984 as a response
to the visual arts community
’s need to provide working studio/exhibition space for local and visiting
artists.
She was director of the Buffalo Bayou ARTPARK for 10 years and traveled to China
in 2001with an Art and Culture Delegation. As a member of the Wings of Desire
Design Team she received the commission to design and construct a monumental
portal for the entrance to Houston Old China Town.

ongoing Breast Cancer Rehab
Program offered at the YMCA
Restoration, a Pilates-based exercise recovery program for breast cancer
survivors, is now being offered at the South Montgomery YMCA.
Designed to help breast cancer survivors restore mobility, improve circulation,
regain energy and rebuild strength, this form of exercise also improves self
confidence and quality of life while reducing emotional stress. The program is
available to all breast cancer survivors, whether eight weeks or eight years
post op.
Shellee Eudy, a Pink Ribbon Program certified instructor and veteran YMCA
fitness instructor, leads the program.
Classes meet Mondays at 12:30 p.m. or Tuesdays at 6 p.m. The program includes a
private personalized patient assessment, six weeks of specialized exercise and
an exercise booklet. Participants must have a doctor
’s release to participate.

Games and conversation
Senior citizens can take a mid-week break at the Bush Library to enjoy games and
conversation. Adult Game Mornings are held in the WCR from 10:30 a.m.-noon.
Cards, checkers, chess and dominos will be provided, or you can bring your own
games. Light snacks will be served. Drop in and share a relaxing morning with
others in the community at the library, located at 6817 Cypresswood Dr, Spring;

The Woodlands Rotary Club OKTOBERFEST, sept. 26-27
The Woodlands Rotary Club will host its first Oktoberfest on Sept. 26-27 in Town
Green Park along The Woodlands Waterway.
The two-day event will feature music from several German bands as well as
authentic German food. Oktoberfest Bavarian souvenirs will also be for sale in
the festival
’s craft vendor fair.
Ticket prices are $10 per person; $5 for children 2-10; and children under 2 are
free.
